Frankfurt, April 20th, 2016. ASCAMSO analysts assessed 12 IaaS vendors operating datacentres in Europe concerning the price-/performance relations. Therefor the analysts distinguished two cases: Scale-out scenarios as they occur in risk analysis or simulations and long term usage as it is required in standard application usage for , e.g. web servers.
The tests were conducted using the publicly available ASCAMSO-platform (https://app.ascamso.com/), providing several test runs comprising different VM sizes at the selected providers throughout the last months.
Very important to note is on the one hand, that the ASCAMSO team executed all tests without any sponsorship, on the other hand are all test results available for review through the reader by using the publicly available ASCAMSO platform. Also the comparison indicators are not relative and therefor can be used to challenge the own IT organization or not compared providers.
The recognized difference in performance of the tested VMs varies by up to the factor 2.5 within a category. This means that engaging a 4-core-machine from Centron could be cheaper than selecting a 2-core-machine from Azure or Softlayer. The use case scenario also has a tremendous impact on the price-/performance ranking.
Following diagram shows the averaged comparison across all categories in the long term use case. The green lines symbolize the market average. Remarkable are the excellent positions of Google, Exoscale and 1&1, all of which achieve an optimal price/performance ratio.
Detailed information on the single categories as well as the scale-out scenario – the temporary usage of compute power – will be found in the report. The report also covers additional recommendations on provider selection as well as details on the current provider ratings.
